If you are looking for a way to keep food and drinks cool but don’t have a large amount of free space then you might consider purchasing a mini fridge, or small refrigerator. There is a wide variety of mini fridges available to cater to the consumer’s specific needs. While some are only able to store small foods and drinks, others are capable of storing meats and various larger groceries. Some considerations to think about while looking at mini fridges to purchase are:

  • What items will you store in the fridge?
  • Where will you place the fridge in your home or office?
  • What size fridge do you need?
  • How energy efficient should it be?

Mini Fridge Overview

Mini Fridges have always been a must have for college student dorms and the workplace but as a late they have been making their way into residential homes and apartments as well.  Mini fridges are also know as a small refrigerator, a mini refrigerator, or a small fridge. More than likely you will have a spot in your home or apartment to place one if you are in need of extra refrigerator space, or if you just want to have a fridge dedicated to drinks.

A mini fridge can be defined as a fridge of 5.5 cubic feet of capacity or less. Typically mini fridges will store a small selection of snacks and drinks, so don’t expect one to be able to hold enough food to last you over a week. Mini fridges can be used at home or at the office as a great way to store extra food or drinks. Some mini fridges also have freezer compartments with the ability to store small frozen meals or ice cubes. Mini fridges are convenient for parties or bar/media rooms so that you have easy access to cold drinks while you are socializing with your friends or watching the big game.  Here is a list of common placements for mini fridges:

  • College Dorm
  • Wet Bar
  • Rec Room
  • Garage
  • Outdoor Kitchen
  • Man Cave
  • Movie Room
  • Home Bar
  • Disguised Kitchen Cabinet

Types of Mini Fridges

There is a wide variety of mini refrigerators that differ in size, features, style, and purpose. Consider what you are looking for in a mini fridge and what you plan on storing before making a purchase.

Does A Freezer Compartment Suit Your Needs?

Mini-Fridge with freezer

Not everyone will need a mini fridge with a freezer but if you are living in a dorm or have an office at work then it’s a must have. There are various options containing freezers ranging from separate freezer compartments, full width freezers, and half width freezers. Depending on how many frozen meals you will be storing will affect your decision on which option to go with. If you are living in a dorm or apartment then you may want to go with the double-door separate freezer compartment option since this allows the most freezer storage space. If you are placing one in your workplace office then you can probably get by with a full or half width freezer option since you will only be storing a few days worth of frozen meals at a time. Keep all these options in mind when making your decision on which mini fridge with freezer you are planning on purchasing. A mini fridge with freezer is an excellent choice for college kids and office workers.

Do You Really Need A Freezer?

Mini Fridge Without Freezer

The majority of mini fridges have some sort of freezer compartment so there aren’t too many options when it comes to all refrigerator models. If you decide that you just want to use your mini fridge for drinks and snacks, or have no need for a freezer compartment then you will want to purchase a mini fridge without a freezer. In doing so you will have more available fridge storage space. Losing the freezer compartment usually allows a mini fridge to have an extra full rack. Mini fridge without freezer is an excellent choice for game rooms and lounge areas.

Mini Fridge with Lock

Frigidaire-FFPH25M4LB-2-5-Cubic-Ft-Compact-Refrigerator-mini-fridge-with-lockIf you plan on purchasing a mini fridge for a dorm room or cubicle in your office then I would highly suggest purchasing a mini fridge with lock.  Two of the most common places for food/drink theft occur in the dorm and office.  So if you want to make sure your drinks and food are secure then purchase a mini fridge with lock so you can keep all your goods safe from your roommate’s or co-worker’s hands.  You can a mini fridge that has a lock for almost all styles of compact fridges.  So all you have to left to decide is the size and whether or not you need a mini fridge with a freezer or without a freezer.

Cube Mini Fridge

Cube Mini FridgeThe cube refrigerator is one of the most commonly used mini fridges because of its compact size and design that allows it to fit in most spaces without taking up too much space. Typically, cube refrigerators will have an interior storage space ranging from 1 to 2.1 cubic feet, and will weigh up to thirty pounds. They are easily mobile which makes them a great mini fridge for the office or certain entertainment rooms of your house. It’s height typically reaches no more than 20 inches tall allowing it to be placed in small spaces, or on top of counters or other appliances.

Due to its small size these fridges are usually less expensive that most other types of mini fridges which is good news if you are on a tight budget. The only downfall of cube fridges is that they are poorly insulated since their design is to be small, lightweight, and portable. This causes them to not be the most economical choice if you are looking for an energy efficient fridge.

Some cube fridges do come with a freezer compartment but it will only be big enough to store a tray of ice cubes. Just like other types of mini fridges, there are varieties of cube fridges that contain locking mechanisms and reversible doors as well.

Mid-Size Mini Fridge

Mid Size Mini FridgeThe mid-size mini fridge is another common type of mini fridge that is larger than the cube fridge. The first things you will notice about a mid-size mini fridge is that if it has freezer space then it will be much larger than that of the cube fridge freezer. There will either be a full or half width freezer compartment in the top of the mini fridge. The freezers typically have enough space to store frozen meals and ice trays as well. The majority of mid-size mini fridges range from 2.5 to 3.4 cubic feet of capacity and have an average height of 26 inches making them taller than cube fridges.

Mid-size mini fridges are more energy efficient due to their larger design but this causes them to be a little more expensive. These fridges are still very compact allowing them to be placed in small spaces, and they are fairly easy to maneuver due to still being lightweight. You can also find versions of this fridge with locking mechanisms and reversible doors as well.

Counter High Mini Fridge

Counter High Mini FridgeCounter high mini fridges typically range from a cubic capacity of 3.5 to 4.5 feet, and are the height of the average counter top. Some varieties will have a freezer compartment while others won’t. There will either be a separate fridge compartment yielding a double door mini fridge, or a full or half width freezer compartment in the top of the single door mini fridge. These are the largest type of mini fridges.

Due to their larger design they are the most energy efficient, but also the most expensive. The storage space in these fridges is much larger than other types allowing them to act as a second refrigerator or backup in a household. Some features you will see in this type of fridge are thermostat, drink dispenser, crisper, and lighting. You can also find versions of this fridge with locking mechanisms and reversible doors as well.

Drinks Only Mini Fridge

Drinks Only Mini FridgeThese mini fridges were not designed to store meats and larger groceries. These are designed to reach temperatures that are appropriate for storing drinks and small snacks. You will find that a lot of drinks only mini fridges will have a glass front and many racks to store large amounts of drinks. Typically, these fridges can store a 12-pack of canned drinks or bottles drinks which is perfect for parties, behind the bar, or close by the recliner in the man cave.

Wine Mini Fridge

Wine Mini FridgeMost wine mini fridges are designed to store white wine at the correct temperature but there are also models that have a separate section that will store red wines at the correct temperature as well. White wines require a storing and serving temperature of 41 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit while red wines require a temperature of 50 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Most wine fridges will have a glass front but make sure it is double pane as opposed to single pane to ensure the best insulation and temperature control. This glass front will be tented sometimes which is desirable to ensure that UV rays do not penetrate the glass front and damage the wine.

Travel Mini Fridge

Travel Mini FridgeA travel mini fridge is exactly what you are thinking it is, a small portable mini fridge for road trips. They are perfect for storing drinks and small snacks on long trips allowing you to save time and money by limiting stops, and not purchasing overpriced drinks at convenient stores or gas stations. The three types of travel mini fridges are as follows:

  • Thermoelectric Model Mini Fridge – These fridges not only cool food but they can also warm it up. They also keep canned or bottled drinks cool while traveling. These fridges are usually only considered for short road trips due to their noise. They are inexpensive and powered by the cigarette lighter in your vehicle , but must be unplugged when the engine is not running due to its drain on the vehicle’s battery.
  • Absorption Model Mini Fridge – This is the most quiet version of the travel mini fridge due to its lack of having motor. Instead, it uses liquid ammonia to keep your drinks and snacks cool. You must keep this fridge level at all times due to its design. It can be powered using gas, AC power, or a car battery.
  • Compressor Model Mini Fridge – This is the best option for long road trips. It can be powered by a 12 volt battery or by using an adapter for your cigarette lighter. This model does not drain the battery as quickly as the thermoelectric model and it is also much quieter. The downfall of this fridge is that external temperature changes will make it difficult for the mini fridge to maintain its internal temperature. This fridge does have a thermostat, but it will freeze or warm food quickly due to outside temperature changes so you have to keep an eye on it.

Overview

With such a wide variety of mini fridges available, the buyer has many important factors to consider when making a purchase. Remember to keep in mind what you are planning on storing, the size fridge that fits in your available space, whether you need a freezer or not, and how the fridge is powered.
